As aulas de inglês começaram muito bem!!!

Assim como o curso de fotografia, o curso de Inglês começou com o pé direito. Embora as primeiras aulas tenham sido de revisões de verbos e gramática, os alunos já manifestaram interesse em aprender a língua e desenvolver suas habilidades de conversação. Tivemos duas aulas concentradas em introduções, vários verbos no presente , e uma revisão de vocabulário. Os alunos sabem muito mais do que querem admitir. A meta para a próxima aula é tentar obter mais conversação dos alunos. Muitos têm medo de falar na aula, com medo de falar de forma incorreta. Mas, pensamos que com a ajuda de alguns alunos incentivando os seus colegas, vamos quebrar essa barreira e ter uma participação muito maior.Começamos cada aula com música, a fim de iniciar em uma atmosfera positiva. Isto dá aos estudantes uma chance de nos mostrar a música que eles gostam, seja do Brasil ou os E.U.A. Nós também fomos capaz de compartilhar alguns das nossas músicas favoritas com eles. Concluindo, as aulas de Inglês estão indo bem e vai continuar a melhorar como a continuação da semana !

English class off to a great start as well!!

Just like the photography course, the English course is off to a great start. Although the first couple of classes have been review of verbs and grammar, the students have expressed interest in learning the language and working on their conversational skills. We have had two classes so far which have focused on introductions, present tense of several verbs, and a review of vocabulary. The students know much more than they want to admit. A goal for the next class is to try and get more of the students speaking. Many are afraid to speak in the class in fear of speaking incorrectly. But, I believe with the help of a few of the students encouraging their peers, we will break this barrier and have much more participation.

We begin every class with music, in order to start in a positive atmosphere. This gives the students a chance to show me music that they enjoy, either from Brazil or the US. I have also been able to share a few of my favorites with them. Many are surprised with my Brazilian collection! Overall the English classes are going smoothly and will continue to improve as the weeks continue!!!

PRIMEIRA OFICINA / FIRST WORKSHOP

Nossa primeira aula foi um sucesso!!!

Iniciamos o projeto em clima de total descontração... = D
Porém, levou um tempo para que os alunos entendessem isso, já que começamos a aula com a apresentação de uma falsa professora da PUC e Doutora de Fotografia Contemporânea que viajou o mundo todo. Eles ficaram surpresos quando viram uma mulher jovem entrar na sala vestida formalmente para o curso de fotografia.

A falsa professora exigiu dos alunos um trabalho escrito de 40 páginas, frente e verso, sobre o que a fotografia significa para eles. Nós, que sabíamos de tudo, deixamos a sala, pois não conseguíamos mais prender o riso ao ver os rostos assustados e olhares duvidosos nos rostos dos alunos...hahaha...e, quando a professora doutora nos viu sair da sala, não agüentou mais e começou a rir...entregou toda a brincadeira.
Nosso objetivo era começar com essa piada para combater a forma tradicional de ensino. Em seguida, falamos sobre a proposta desse programa, a nossa idéia de de uma experiência de aprendizagem mútua e mostramos nossas metas para os próximos 2 meses. Queremos ser mais como orientadores e facilitadores, do que um professor tradicional que prega a informação a um grupo de estudantes que são orientados a tomar e decorar.

Em seguida, demos início a uma rodada de conversa, pedimos que cada aluno se apresentasse e falasse um pouco das suas atividades para toda a turma. Cada aluno foi convidado a dizer o seu nome e o quê eles estavam esperando para o futuro a partir deste curso. Foi também um momento onde Waleska pôde falar sobre suas experiências com fotografia e seu trabalho atual no jornal local. Anna explicou um pouco sobre o seu tempo aqui no ano passado e por que ela escolheu para voltar ao Pirambu. Tivemos uma grande conversa sobre o porquê do projeto no Pirambu e por que uma americana quis voltar para este bairro. Foi muito bom ouvir as pessoas falando sobre suas vizinhanças de uma maneira diferente. Em vez de identificar o Pirambu com a violência, drogas, etc, fomos capazes de falar de sobre o incrível comprimento e acolhimento da comunidade e do povo, a história da região, etc. Na verdade, podemos concluir que estamos cheios de expectativas positivas para este projeto! Foi ótimo ver que todas as nossas idéias estão, realmente, virando realidade.

Our first class was a success!!

The first class was a complete success! = D
We started the class with a joke in order to wake up the students. Our good friend Clarisse arrived dressed as a well known professor of Photography that we recruited to instruct the photography portion of the class. She started the class explaining her worldwide travels as a photographera. If only you could have seen the faces of the students as she was talking.

Clarisse, our beloved ¨Professor of Photography¨, demanded the students to write a 40 page assignment about what photography means to them. We, who knew everything, left the room because we could not stop laughing at the frightened faces of the students.hahaha ... They were very confused as to what they had signed up for. Once the Professor saw us leave the room, she started laughing and gave away the whole game. Our goal was to start out with this joke in order to combat the traditional form of schooling. We then jumped in to what our goals for the next 2 months were and how we hope that this program is more of a mutual learning experience. We want to be more like mentors and facilitators than a traditional teacher who preaches information to a group of students.

We formed a circle with our chairs to start the conversation. We began with a little overview of the program and then went around and asked each student to introduce themelves. Each student was asked to say their name and what they were looking forward to from this course. It was also a time for Waleska to talk about her experience with photography and her current work at the local newspaper. Anna was able to explain a bit about her time here last year and why she chose to return to Pirambu. We had a great conversation about why she chose to return to Pirambu? Why would an American want to come to this neighborhood? It was really great to hear people talking about their neighborhood in a different way. Instead of pinpointing Pirambu for the violence, drugs,etc. we were able to talk in length about the amazing community of people, the history of the area, etc. Actually, we concluded that we are full of positive expectations for this project! It was great to see that all our ideas are coming to life.

WE WOULD LIKE TO THANK THE DAVIS FOUNDATION

Without the help of the Katherine Wasserman Davis Foundation, the Pirambu Peace Project would not be in action. Katherine Wasserman Davis started the 100 Projects for Peace program on her 100th birthday. A humanitarian and promoter of peace, Davis proposed to grant 100 college students the opportunity to commit to bring peace to the world. Davis donated $10,000 for each student to conduct a project for peace. Each project is unique in its own way, allowing each student to be creative with their thoughts on how to promote peace in the world today. The successes of the first year excited Davis, so that she decided to fund 100 more projects the next year. The Pirambu Peace Project is a part of the 4th group of projects. We would like to thank Katherine Wasserman Davis for giving us the opportunity to share this important message with more of the world.
