Pirambu Sem Fronteiras!

Apesar de não ter postado em algum tempo, muita coisa aconteceu com o Pirambu Peace Project. Infelizmente em 13 de setembro Anna tinha a dizer seu adeus para Pirambu e voltar para os EUA. Ela deixou com muitas emoções, após o mais espantoso de quatro meses de sua vida. A primeira fase da Pirambu Peace Project foi muito memorável e foi um sucesso tão grande que estamos trabalhando no sentido de implementar a segunda fase!


Nesse meio tempo, Anna tem estado a trabalhar arduamente para conseguir o trabalho do PPP para outros grupos de pessoas. Em 30 de outubro, Anna voltou para a sua Universidade, Dickinson College, onde foi convidado para expor os trabalhos dos 18 alunos do PPP. "Made in Pirambu", foi na comunidade de Dickinson, no estado da Pensilvânia para o dia inteiro. Havia muitas pessoas que vieram ver as fotografias e estavam em absoluta surpresa por sua alta qualidade.

Estes foram apenas alguns dos comentários deixados comigo de telespectadores. No geral o trabalho realizado pelo Pirambu Peace Project deixou uma impressão muito grande na comunidade de Dickinson. Conversei com vários espectadores (mesmo alguns do Brasil!) Que estão ansiosos para ajudar a manter o andamento do projeto.


A mostra incluiu todas as fotografias que foram destaque no "Made in Pirambu" exposição em Fortaleza. Houve várias cópias traduzidas dos artigos de jornal, assim como o blog para os telespectadores para saber mais sobre o projeto em si. As biografias pessoais e colagens dos alunos estavam em um local visível para que os telespectadores têm a oportunidade de conhecer os artistas.


No geral foi um momento de inspiração para trazer o Pirambu Peace Project volta à Pensilvânia. Foi muito importante ter a chance de agradecer a todas as pessoas que ajudaram a trazer o projeto para a vida.

Próximos passos:
Anna passou cidades e está agora a viver na capital dos EUA, Washington DC. Ela está animado para continuar a partilhar as histórias de Pirambu com esta cidade e já começou a pensar em formas criativas para exposições mais nos EUA. Ela vai mantê-lo atualizado!

Connecting Communities through the Camera Lens

Although we have not posted in awhile, a lot has happened with the Pirambu Peace Project. Sadly on September 13th Anna had to say her goodbyes to Pirambu and return to the USA. She left with many emotions after the most amazing four months of her life. The first phase of the Pirambu Peace Project was very memorable and was such a success that we are working towards implementing a second phase!

In the mean time Anna has been hard at work to get the work of the PPP to other groups of people. On October 30th, Anna returned to her University, Dickinson College, where she was invited to exhibit the work of the 18 students of the PPP. "Made in Pirambu" was in the Dickinson community in the state of Pennsylvania for the full day. There were many people that came to see the photographs and were in absolute amazement by their high quality.

These were just a few of the comments left with me from viewers. Overall the work done by the Pirambu Peace Project has left a huge impression on the Dickinson community. I talked with several viewers (even a few from Brazil!) who are eager to help keep the project going.


The exhibit included all of the photographs that were featured in the "Made in Pirambu" exhibit in Fortaleza. There were several translated copies of the newspaper articles as well as the blog for viewers to learn more about the project itself. The personal biographies and collages of the students were in a prominent location in order for the viewers to get the opportunity to meet the artists.


Overall it was an inspiring moment to bring the Pirambu Peace Project back to Pennsylvania. It was really important to get the chance to thank all of the people who helped bring the project to life.

Next steps:
Anna has moved cities and is now living in the capital of the USA, Washington DC. She is excited to continue sharing the stories of Pirambu with this city and has already began thinking of creative ways for more exhibits in the USA. She will keep you updated!!

Pirambu na mídia

Estes dois meses intensos de projeto nos proporcionaram um espaço na mídia. Durante este período, recebemos alguns telefonemas e pessoas interessadas em conhecer mais sobre o nosso projeto. Tivemos nosso nome escrito algumas vezes nas páginas dos jornais. Pudemos ver o nome Pirambu ser escrito nas matérias a partir de uma nova perspectiva, onde estava em pauta não mais a criminalização do bairro, mas a construção de um novo olhar e a transformação das reais belezas encontradas ali.

These two intense months of the Pirambu Peace Project were given attention by the media. During this period, we received a few calls from people interested in learning more about our project. We had our name show up several times in the local newspapers. The neighborhood of Pirambu was in different sections of the newspaper. Instead of focusing on the crime associated with the neighborhood, the newspaper focused on the construction of the new look and the transformation of the beauty within the community.

The Innerworkings of the Diário do Nordeste/ O funcionamento interno do Diário do Nordeste

On Tuesday night, the 3rd of August, the adventurous group of the Pirambu Peace Project explored a new area of photography. We were invited by Eduardo, Editor of Photography at the Diario do Nordeste newspaper, to take a tour of the building and learn more about the production process of a newspaper.


Na noite de terça-feira, 03 de agosto, o grupo de aventureiros da Pirambu Peace Project pôde explorar uma nova área de fotografia. Fomos convidados por Eduardo Queiroz, Editor Chefe de Fotografia do jornal Diário do Nordeste, para fazer um tour do edifício e aprender mais sobre o processo de produção de um jornal.

This was a very interesting fieldtrip for the PPP group. It gave the budding photographers a glance at a possible field for work. As the first phase of the course is coming to an end, there has been a lot of discussion of how to continue with photography. This first visit to the Diario was a great way to show the students what they could do if they continued to work with photography.

Esta foi uma aula de campo muito interessante para o grupo do PPP. Deu aos novos fotógrafos um novo olhar sobre um campo possível para o trabalho, o trabalho de fotojornalista. Como a primeira fase do curso está chegando ao fim, tem havido muita discussão sobre como continuar com a fotografia. Esta primeira visita ao Diário do Nordeste foi uma ótima maneira de mostrar aos alunos o que eles poderiam fazer se eles continuassem a trabalhar com fotografia.
Photojournalism is a very important field of photography that we hope to talk more about. We are planning another meeting with Eduardo to add insight from his personal experiences.

O fotojornalismo é uma área muito importante da fotografia ao qual esperamos para falar mais sobre. Estamos planejando uma nova reunião com Eduardo Queiroz para acrescentar mais conhecimento a partir de suas experiências pessoais.


The photography mentor and professor, Waleska, is currently working as a photojournalist at the Diario as she finishes her studies at the University of Fortaleza. She has been a great example for the students as a Pirambu resident whose hard work has given her the chance to work as a photographer for the citywide newspaper.


A mentora e orientadora de fotografia, Waleska, está atualmente trabalhando como fotojornalista no Diário do Nordeste. Ela tem sido um grande exemplo para os alunos do Pirambu, já que está tendo a chance de trabalhar como fotógrafa de um jornal de circulação para toda a cidade.

Made in Pirambu: The First Glimpse

Tuesday August 10th marked the opening of the exhibition: Made in Pirambu. In the beautiful space of Cuca da Barra in the Barra of Ceará, we organized an exhibition of 60 photographs to begin sharing our work with the rest of the city. The photographs were hung on a homemade metal structure that resembled a clothesline. It was a very simple set up, in order to give more attention to the photographs. Each photo was printed on 30cm x 40 cm paper, matted, and protected by a plastic cover. There were other images that were hung on the walls surrounding the metal structure.

Terça-feira, dia 10 de agosto, marcou a abertura da exposição Made in Pirambu. No belo espaço do Cuca da Barra do Ceará, organizamos uma exposição com 60 fotografias para começar a compartilhar nosso trabalho com o resto da cidade. As fotografias foram penduradas em uma estrutura de metal caseiro que parecia um varal, muito simples, mas que podia das mais atenção às fotografias. Cada foto foi impressa em papel de 30 centímetros por 40 centímetros, opaco, e protegido por uma capa de plástico. Havia outras imagens que eram penduradas nas paredes ao redor da estrutura metálica.

There was a great turn out for the opening. There were many families and friends of the students as well as residents of other neighborhoods. It was an emotional evening for the PPP group, as they viewed the results of all of their hard work. It was the first moment that they had the chance to share their stories through photography with their families, friends, and other visitors.


Houve uma grande espera para a abertura da exposição. Havia muitos familiares e amigos dos alunos, bem como moradores de outros bairros. Foi uma noite muito emocionante para o grupo do PPP, pois ali eles puderam ver os resultados de todo nosso trabalho duro. Foi o primeiro momento que tivemos a oportunidade de partilhar, através das fotografia, suas histórias para familiares, amigos e outros visitantes.
"This exhibition is the first of its kind!", "These photographs truly capture the emotion that is alive within Pirambu!", "That´s my street"! These were some of the commentary that was overheard at the opening. Overall, the group was very proud to show off their community through their photographs.
The exhibition was open to the public for the week following the opening.
The next stop for the photographs is the high school Lions Jangada, in the neighborhood of Pirambu.


“ Esta exposição é a primeira deste tipo”, “ Estas fotografias realmente puderam capturar a emoção que está viva dentro do Pirambu”, “Essa é a minha rua”! Estes foram alguns dos comentários que foi escutado durante a abertura. No geral, o grupo estava muito orgulhoso de mostrar a sua comunidade através de suas fotografias.
A exposição ficou aberta ao público durante toda a semana após a abertura. E, a próxima parada está prevista para a próxima semana, na Escola de Ensino Fundamental Lions Janga, no bairro do Pirambu.

MADE IN PIRAMBU

Making Connections / Fazendo Conexões

Although the photography course is the primary focus of the Pirambu Peace Project, the students have also been very busy working on their English. This past week (July 26- July 29) each student presented their families to the class, as we have been studying the vocabulary of the family. These presentations combined the work they have been producing for the photography class to add a visual portion to the presentation. Although there were many nervous presenters, we left the class with a greater understanding of each students home life.

Apesar do foco principal do Pirambu Peace Project ser o curso de fotografia, os estudantes também estavam dedicando parte do seu tempo com as aulas práticas de Inglês. As últimas aulas foram focadas no estudo do vocabulário da família, e, como prática deste exercício, na semana passada (26 julho - 29 julho), cada aluno apresentou sua família para turma – falando inglês e exibindo fotos.

An amazing moment during one of the presentations was when one student, Clatiane, was talking about her uncle, another student exclaimed, "that's your uncle? He's my cousin"! Just to show you how connected this area really is!

Um momento incrível durante uma das apresentações foi quando uma aluna, Clatiane, estava falando do seu tio, e um outro aluno exclamou: “ Ele é seu tio? Ele é meu primo!”. - Só pra mostrar como esta comunidade está realmente conectada.

Another incredible experience for the Pirambu Peace Project was our fieldtrip to Maracanau to meet up with a group of high school students from Global Leadership Adventures. This was a group of about 27 students from the United States who were in Fortaleza for a month learning about the area and volunteering at several non-profits around the city. A great friend, Adrienne, introduced us to the program and gave us the idea to form a connection between the two groups.

Outra experiência incrível para o Pirambu Peace Project foi o nossa aula de campo em Maracanaú, onde nosso grupo pôde encontrar com um outro grupo do ensino médio, sendo estes estudantes norte-americanos do projeto Global Leadership Adventures. Era um grupo de 27 jovens que estavam em Fortaleza para m mês de aprendizagem sobre a área e voluntariado em diversas organizações sem fins lucrativos da cidade. Uma grande amiga, Adrienne, foi quem nos apresentou o programa e nos deu a idéia de formar uma conexão entre os dois grupos...Por sinal, uma ótima idéia!

After an adventurous journey to Maracanau, we arrived eager to practice our english and meet a group of adolescents from another country. We started out the afternoon with our traditional circle of presentations. In order to get the groups interacting, we followed the presentations with several icebreakers. Following these games, the groups were beginning to feel much more comfortable and began to mix.

Depois de uma longa aventura durante o trajeto de Maracanaú, chegamos ansiosos para a nossa prática de Inglês e para encontrar o grupo de adolescentes de outro país. Inicialmente, começamos com o nosso círculo de apresentações tradicionais. Como estratégia de obter interação do grupo, seguimos com várias atividades para quebrar o gelo. Depois desses jogos, os grupos estavam bem mais confortáveis e começaram a se misturar.

There were several people who chose to have a Brazil vs US soccer game, while others played a cards, and others watched while conversing in English and Portuguese.

Havia vários jovens que optaram por uma partida de futebol entre Brasil X EUA, enquanto outros jogavam cartas, e outros observavam tudo enquanto conversavam em Inglês e Português.

We ended the day with a presentation of our project, showing several photographs that the students have already taken. We shared with them our mission as well as stories from the past two months. This was a great test for Anna´s translating skills...

Nós terminamos o dia com uma apresentação do nosso projeto, mostrando diversas fotografias que os alunos tiraram. Nós compartilhamos com eles a nossa missão, assim como as histórias dos dois últimos meses. Também, este foi um grande teste para Anna testar suas habilidades como tradutora ...

Several students from the PPP shared their comments about the project so far. We also received several comments from the GLA group about their thoughts on our initiative. Overall it was a very important moment for the Pirambu Peace Project. A goal for the project is communication. This connection enabled the students from Pirambu to begin communicating across borders, sharing their stories with the rest of the world.

Vários alunos do PPP partilharam suas observações sobre o projeto. Também, recebemos vários comentários do grupo do GLA, seus pensamentos sobre a nossa iniciativa. No geral, foi um momento muito importante para o Pirambu Peace Project. E, como a meta do projeto é a comunicação, esta ligação permitiu aos alunos do Pirambu que começassem a comunicação expandindo fronteiras, compartilhando suas histórias com o resto do mundo.

History of Pirambu

One thing is to know a person by name and reference... but another is to know about their stories and experiences. As we know, the major force that drives our project are the students, who are residents of Pirambu. We feel that it is important for them to take a different look at their neighborhood, in order to recognize it as a symbol of great struggle, resistance and strength. With the idea of growing ties, and strengthening our love and affection for Pirambu, we thought - almost a requirement of the project - was a necessary introduction of the history of this neighborhood.

One of our greatest friends of the project - "Junior" - was and is a person of great strength and respect in the neighborhood. We asked him to tell us a little about the history of the neighborhood and its origin. Junior, who invited us to attend this presentation in his house this past Tuesday (July 27/de), talked a little about the origin of the name Pirambu (name of a fish) and told some stories of his life, family and friends who have lived in this community .

A big surprise was to see people arrive during the slide show. Aryton Baker, another great leader of this community. Aryton, also known as the lawyer of the poor, is a man who since his youth has been fighting against injustices and harsh conditions found in this neighborhood.

Like Junior, Ayrton and other friends spent a time of youth to live in the poorest section of Pirambu and fight for better living conditions.

Another thing that caught our attention, was the many open mouths and attentive eyes, listening in awe of the reports of our guests. As expected, this presentation was a great success, and we now have an even greater reason to lift our chests and say we live in ... Pirambu!
