As aulas de inglês começaram muito bem!!!

Assim como o curso de fotografia, o curso de Inglês começou com o pé direito. Embora as primeiras aulas tenham sido de revisões de verbos e gramática, os alunos já manifestaram interesse em aprender a língua e desenvolver suas habilidades de conversação. Tivemos duas aulas concentradas em introduções, vários verbos no presente , e uma revisão de vocabulário. Os alunos sabem muito mais do que querem admitir. A meta para a próxima aula é tentar obter mais conversação dos alunos. Muitos têm medo de falar na aula, com medo de falar de forma incorreta. Mas, pensamos que com a ajuda de alguns alunos incentivando os seus colegas, vamos quebrar essa barreira e ter uma participação muito maior.Começamos cada aula com música, a fim de iniciar em uma atmosfera positiva. Isto dá aos estudantes uma chance de nos mostrar a música que eles gostam, seja do Brasil ou os E.U.A. Nós também fomos capaz de compartilhar alguns das nossas músicas favoritas com eles. Concluindo, as aulas de Inglês estão indo bem e vai continuar a melhorar como a continuação da semana !

English class off to a great start as well!!

Just like the photography course, the English course is off to a great start. Although the first couple of classes have been review of verbs and grammar, the students have expressed interest in learning the language and working on their conversational skills. We have had two classes so far which have focused on introductions, present tense of several verbs, and a review of vocabulary. The students know much more than they want to admit. A goal for the next class is to try and get more of the students speaking. Many are afraid to speak in the class in fear of speaking incorrectly. But, I believe with the help of a few of the students encouraging their peers, we will break this barrier and have much more participation.

We begin every class with music, in order to start in a positive atmosphere. This gives the students a chance to show me music that they enjoy, either from Brazil or the US. I have also been able to share a few of my favorites with them. Many are surprised with my Brazilian collection! Overall the English classes are going smoothly and will continue to improve as the weeks continue!!!

Nossa primeira aula foi um sucesso!!!

Iniciamos o projeto em clima de total descontração... = D
Porém, levou um tempo para que os alunos entendessem isso, já que começamos a aula com a apresentação de uma falsa professora da PUC e Doutora de Fotografia Contemporânea que viajou o mundo todo. Eles ficaram surpresos quando viram uma mulher jovem entrar na sala vestida formalmente para o curso de fotografia.

A falsa professora exigiu dos alunos um trabalho escrito de 40 páginas, frente e verso, sobre o que a fotografia significa para eles. Nós, que sabíamos de tudo, deixamos a sala, pois não conseguíamos mais prender o riso ao ver os rostos assustados e olhares duvidosos nos rostos dos alunos...hahaha...e, quando a professora doutora nos viu sair da sala, não agüentou mais e começou a rir...entregou toda a brincadeira.
Nosso objetivo era começar com essa piada para combater a forma tradicional de ensino. Em seguida, falamos sobre a proposta desse programa, a nossa idéia de de uma experiência de aprendizagem mútua e mostramos nossas metas para os próximos 2 meses. Queremos ser mais como orientadores e facilitadores, do que um professor tradicional que prega a informação a um grupo de estudantes que são orientados a tomar e decorar.

Em seguida, demos início a uma rodada de conversa, pedimos que cada aluno se apresentasse e falasse um pouco das suas atividades para toda a turma. Cada aluno foi convidado a dizer o seu nome e o quê eles estavam esperando para o futuro a partir deste curso. Foi também um momento onde Waleska pôde falar sobre suas experiências com fotografia e seu trabalho atual no jornal local. Anna explicou um pouco sobre o seu tempo aqui no ano passado e por que ela escolheu para voltar ao Pirambu. Tivemos uma grande conversa sobre o porquê do projeto no Pirambu e por que uma americana quis voltar para este bairro. Foi muito bom ouvir as pessoas falando sobre suas vizinhanças de uma maneira diferente. Em vez de identificar o Pirambu com a violência, drogas, etc, fomos capazes de falar de sobre o incrível comprimento e acolhimento da comunidade e do povo, a história da região, etc. Na verdade, podemos concluir que estamos cheios de expectativas positivas para este projeto! Foi ótimo ver que todas as nossas idéias estão, realmente, virando realidade.

Our first class was a success!!

The first class was a complete success! = D
We started the class with a joke in order to wake up the students. Our good friend Clarisse arrived dressed as a well known professor of Photography that we recruited to instruct the photography portion of the class. She started the class explaining her worldwide travels as a photographera. If only you could have seen the faces of the students as she was talking.

Clarisse, our beloved ¨Professor of Photography¨, demanded the students to write a 40 page assignment about what photography means to them. We, who knew everything, left the room because we could not stop laughing at the frightened faces of the students.hahaha ... They were very confused as to what they had signed up for. Once the Professor saw us leave the room, she started laughing and gave away the whole game. Our goal was to start out with this joke in order to combat the traditional form of schooling. We then jumped in to what our goals for the next 2 months were and how we hope that this program is more of a mutual learning experience. We want to be more like mentors and facilitators than a traditional teacher who preaches information to a group of students.

We formed a circle with our chairs to start the conversation. We began with a little overview of the program and then went around and asked each student to introduce themelves. Each student was asked to say their name and what they were looking forward to from this course. It was also a time for Waleska to talk about her experience with photography and her current work at the local newspaper. Anna was able to explain a bit about her time here last year and why she chose to return to Pirambu. We had a great conversation about why she chose to return to Pirambu? Why would an American want to come to this neighborhood? It was really great to hear people talking about their neighborhood in a different way. Instead of pinpointing Pirambu for the violence, drugs,etc. we were able to talk in length about the amazing community of people, the history of the area, etc. Actually, we concluded that we are full of positive expectations for this project! It was great to see that all our ideas are coming to life.

Without the help of the Katherine Wasserman Davis Foundation, the Pirambu Peace Project would not be in action. Katherine Wasserman Davis started the 100 Projects for Peace program on her 100th birthday. A humanitarian and promoter of peace, Davis proposed to grant 100 college students the opportunity to commit to bring peace to the world. Davis donated $10,000 for each student to conduct a project for peace. Each project is unique in its own way, allowing each student to be creative with their thoughts on how to promote peace in the world today. The successes of the first year excited Davis, so that she decided to fund 100 more projects the next year. The Pirambu Peace Project is a part of the 4th group of projects. We would like to thank Katherine Wasserman Davis for giving us the opportunity to share this important message with more of the world.

Sem a ajuda do Wasserman Katherine Davis Foundation, o Pirambu Peace Project não teria nascido. Katherine Wasserman Davis começou o “100 projetos para a Paz” em seu aniversário de 100 anos. A ajuda humanitária e promotora da paz foi o que propôs a Fundação Davis quando concedeu a 100 estudantes universitários a oportunidade de comprometer-se a trazer a paz ao mundo. Davis doou 10.000 dólares para cada aluno para realizar um projeto para a paz. Cada projeto tem uma idéia única, uma identidade da sua própria maneira, permitindo que cada aluno seja criativo com seus pensamentos sobre como promover a paz no mundo de hoje. Let´s Go Pirambu!

We are looking forward to the start of classes, because the project actually has begun! The past two weeks we have been visiting the families of each student and getting to know more of Pirambu, walking up and down streets and hills, beneath the blazing sun of Fortaleza. Also, in these two weeks, we have constructed the plans (photographic display and pinhole) that will be implemented during the program. We have also been preparing the classroom at ACARTES, fixing the lights and painting the walls!!
During each visit with the families, we talked with some members of the family, such as a father, mother, aunt, grandmother, etc. We asked that they give us an introduction of his/her son/nephew/etc...Also, we asked what they think of the neighborhood and what relationship they have with the community. Another question we asked was their relationship with photography, if they have a camera and take photos of special occasions, birthdays, graduations, etc. We asked their permission to document the interviews in video.
We now have many different answers and interesting reports of some residents of Pirambu. This first contact with the families, excites us because we will work be working with a group of young people with diverse skills and interests. Each student and family are excited and ready to be a part of the Pirambu Peace Project. We couldn´t be more pleased with the group and can´t wait to see their artistic talent emerge!!

VAMO LÁ PIRAMBU

Estamos na expectativa do início das aulas, porque o projeto, na verdade, já começou! Faz duas semanas que estamos visitando as famílias dos alunos e conhecendo mais do Pirambu, subindo e descendo ruas e ladeiras, em baixo do sol escaldante de Fortaleza, pintando as paredes da nossa sala no Acartes... Também, nestas duas semanas, fizemos os planejamentos e experiências (visor fotográfico e pinhole) que serão aplicadas no decorrer do programa. Durante as visitações das famílias dos alunos, conversamos com algum dos membros, como o pai, a mãe, tia, avó... e, pedimos para que eles nos apresentassem o perfil do seu filho, sobrinho,... Também, perguntamos o que eles acham do bairro que moram e qual relação e eles tem com a comunidade. Outra pergunta que fizemos, foi quanto ao contato deles com a fotografia, se eles tem a cultura de registrar momentos festivos, importantes, etc.
Pedimos autorização de cada familiar que nos recebeu e documentamos todas as entrevistas em vídeo, e temos agora as mais diversas respostas e interessantes relatos de alguns moradores do Pirambu. Esse primeiro contato com a família, nos fez gerar uma expectativa enorme, já que presumimos que iremos trabalhar com um grupo de jovens com características diversas e aptidões diferentes e novas, que será muito bom, já que temos como proposta do projeto a troca de cultura, explorando as raízes de cada participante do projeto, desde nós, orientadoras, aos alunos.
Então, galera, envie sugestões, comentários, perguntas...participe! Queremos ouvir o que vocês pensam sobre nossas idéias e ações. Ficaremos, realmente, muito gratas.

ABOUT PIRAMBU PEACE PROJECT

The Pirambu Peace Project is an eight-week program aimed to empower a group of adolescents from the neighborhood of Pirambu in Fortaleza through photography and English language skills. The goal is to give these students the opportunity for self-advancement through acquiring new skills, as well as to empower the children to use the camera lens as a tool for self-exploration. Photography will give the students a chance to expose their realities with the city of Fortaleza as well as the rest of the world. Images will reveal the rich culture and the hearts of the people of Pirambu.
For the English language portion of the project, our goal is to grow the student’s conversational skills. We will use the community language learning approach in the classroom. This method allows student input in terms of content, while making our role more one of a facilitator. While focusing on conversation, we will incorporate photographs to learn new vocabulary. By the end of the eight weeks, each student will be asked to write a bilingual essay about themselves and their photographs for the final exhibition.

We are targeting students who are entering a stage of transition: their final year of the local public high school. We have recruited a group of 20 students from two local high schools: Lions Jangada and Flavio Marcilio. We contacted administrators at the two schools who connected us with students they felt would benefit most from the program. Each student was asked to write a brief explanation of why they want to learn photography and expand their English language skills.

The courses will start on Monday, June 14th. Students will meet in the afternoons for two hours at ACARTES, Monday through Thursday. The classes will run until the 29th of July. Throughout the eight weeks, students will learn how to use the camera as an artistic tool, how to express themselves through the camera lens, and how to converse in English. We will begin the eight-week course with an introduction to photography as well as an evaluation of their English language skills. We have created a detailed weekly schedule that will include the following activities:
• Analyzing examples of the elements of photography
• Traveling to Barraca da Amizade, an NGO in another part of the city, to learn with other photography students.
• Editing digital photographs on the computer.
• Traveling to Ze Albano’s house and studio for a lesson from a professional Brazilian photographer.
• Joining students at the University of Fortaleza’s photography lab to observe a college level program.
• Learning about employment opportunities related to the coursework.
• Preparing a bilingual exhibition for the public of Fortaleza.

By the end of the eight-week course we expect the group to know the features of the camera, understand the power of photography as a social tool, and gain the confidence to converse in English. The course will conclude with an exhibition in Pirambu, to share the student’s work with their families and friends. This will give the students the chance to share their images and stories with a group less familiar with their lives. As Albert Einstein said, “peace cannot be kept by force, it can only be achieved by understanding.”

SOBRE O PIRAMBU PEACE PROJECT

O Pirambu Peace Project é um programa de oito semanas destinado a capacitar, através da fotografia e das competências linguísticas do Inglês, um grupo de adolescentes do bairro do Pirambu, em Fortaleza. O objetivo é dar a estes alunos a oportunidade de auto-aperfeiçoamento através de aquisição de novas competências, bem como capacitar as crianças para usar a lente da câmera como um instrumento de auto-exploração.

Para a parte do estudo do Inglês do projeto, nosso objetivo é crescer habilidades de conversação do aluno. Para a aprendizagem e abordagem em sala de aula, vamos usar a linguagem da comunidade . Este método permite a entrada de estudantes em termos de conteúdo, ao fazer o nosso papel mais uma de um facilitador. Ao focalizar na conversa, vamos incorporar fotografias para aprender vocabulário um novo. Ao
final das oito semanas, cada aluno será convidado a escrever um ensaio bilíngüe sobre si mesmos e suas fotos para a exposição final. Nosso objetivo é atingir os estudantes que estão prestes a entrar numa fase de transição: os anos finais da escola secundária local. Nós recrutaremos um grupo de 20 alunos de duas escolas secundárias locais: Lions Jangada e Flavio Marcílio. Temos contato com os administradores das duas escolas, eles vão nos ajudar a conectar com os alunos se
sentem mais próximos e beneficiados a da proposta do programa. Contamos também com a parceria do Centro de Ciências e Artes (ACARTES), uma ONG que já tem trabalhos voltados ao audiovisual e a imagem. Do processo de seleção, cada aluno foi convidado a escrever uma breve explicação de por que eles gostariam de aprender fotografia
e ampliar as suas competências linguísticas do Inglês.

Os cursos terão início na segunda - feira, 14 de junho. Os estudantes se reunirão à noite, durante duas horas na ACARTES, de segunda a quinta-feira. As aulas serão executados até a primeira semana de agosto. Ao longo das oito semanas, os alunos irão aprender a usar a câmera como um instrumento artístico, como se expressar através da lente da câmera, e como conversar em Inglês. O início do curso terá
aulas de introdução à fotografia, com técnicas práticas e teoricas, bem como uma avaliação de suas competências linguísticas Inglês. Nós criamos um cronograma detalhado semanal que irá incluir as seguintes atividades:
• Analisar exemplos dos elementos da fotografia
• Edição de fotografias digitais no computador.
• Parceria com o fotógrafo Zé Albano, que irá ensinar técnicas
fotográficas de estúdio para uma lição de um fotógrafo profissional
brasileiro.
• Visitar o laboratório de fotografia da Universidade de Fortaleza
para observar um programa de nível universitário.
• Aprender sobre as oportunidades de emprego relacionadas com os cursos.
• Preparação de uma exposição bilíngüe para o público de Fortaleza.

Ao final , esperamos que o grupo conheça as funcionalidades da câmera, compreenda o poder da fotografia como uma ferramenta social, e ganhar a confiança para conversar em Inglês. O curso terminará com duas exposições: a primeira, no Pirambu, para compartilhar o trabalho do aluno com suas famílias e amigos; e a segunda nos Estados Unidos, com uma exposição da Dickinsun College. Tentaremos, também, tornar esta exposição intinerante, expondo em várias partes da cidade. Isto dará aos alunos a oportunidade de compartilhar suas imagens e histórias com um grupo menos familiarizados com as suas vidas. Como disse Albert Einstein: "A paz não pode ser mantida pela força, só pode ser conseguida pela compreensão."
